On Thursday March 18 Education Now! will podcast an interview
with Belinda Rawlins, for a focus on The Media & Education.
Belinda has been active in the community media and technology movement for nearly
25 years. She started out at an all-volunteer radio station in Cincinnati, Ohio,
where she programmed a late night radio show for 18 years and began to understand
the importance of community based media in society.
Belinda turned her back on
working for The Man and moved on to non-profit work, starting
with the Cincinnati Art Museum and moving on to Media Bridges
Cincinnati, which she transformed from a traditional public
access television model into a media arts education center.
Later, Rawlins took on a transitional role as the Executive
Director of the New Mexico Media Literacy Project, helping
to strengthen the organization during the founding directorís retirement.
But the siren song of community radio was strong drawing
Rawlins to the rocky cliffs of Northern California to head
up Mendocino County Public Broadcasting, a rural community
radio network with six facilities, three frequencies, and
125 volunteers. Belinda was a guest on Education Now
during this time, and was the midwife at the birth of Education
Now!
Making her grand return to the east coast, Belinda became
the Director of the Transmission Project in 2008. Here she
loves working with media and technology non-profits across
the nation to build their capacity to better serve their
communities.

She also grows vegetables, ornamentals and she has orchards
of fruit trees. Her Philo gardens are extensive and beautiful.
Our focus will be on herbal medicine in gardens for kids

Dr. Mae Sakharov's career in education and psychology began
in 1970, after having worked as a professional actress since
adolescence. She first contributed professionally as Head
Teacher in the University of California at Santa Barbara
Childcare Center, one of the first in the United States.
They served children from birth through third grade. She
was also responsible for supervising five hundred university
students who interned in the program. From there she relocated
to San Francisco, starting two literacy programs, one held
at a juvenile detention center. This program proved so successful
that it was picked up and funded by the Delancey Street Foundation.
After moving to New York to complete her education, she
received 3 graduate degrees from Columbia University Teachers
College with the highest honors. Her dissertation on Stress
and Burnout in the Nurturing Professions became seminal in
the field and has been published since 1981. While at Columbia
Mae was employed by Albert Einstein Hospital as the Head
Teacher in a Preventive Child Abuse Program, and interned
at the inpatient Autistic Program at Bellevue Hospital under
the aegis of Dr. Magda Campbell. Upon completing her doctorate,
she opened MLS Learning Center, the first of its kind in
New York City, which ultimately saw 350 clients a week. Concurrently,
she served as a consultant to many television shows and appeared
on camera, including being nominated for an Emmy for the ìOutsiders,î on
ABCísí20/20í a segment about alienated
teenagers. MLS grew to be a learning center and school for
students in need of transition.
Pastor Gary Wilkinson commissioned Dr. Sakharov to open
a replica of her program for inner city high-risk children
in Trenton, New Jersey, called The Fatherís Heart
Urban Prep School. Since 1981 she has taught psychology,
language acquisition, special education, and writing at NYU,
College of New Rochelle, College of New Jersey, and at her
current position at Bucks Country Community College. Accordingly,
Mae supervised students throughout the country from undergraduate
to PhD. Since 2002 she has written a monthly column for the
Princeton Packet Publications on Parenting. In 1996 she was
the first American to be sent to Viet Nam to work at an orphanage.
Outside of her work, and her love for her students, she
has a very successful college counseling program, seeing
about 100 students a year. She has been practicing Yoga consistently
since 1957. In her remaining time she writes pet biographies,
sits on boards and committees, consults at schools, and gives
workshops.
I hope you will be able to join us for the 'launch' at 7
PM (PST) on Thursday, April 15th for this focus on On-Line
Learning, with Dr. Mae Sakharov.
