AMS 2006 ANNUAL CONFERENCE
“Montessori Education:
Creating New Possibilities for Children, Youth, and Our World”

March 30- April 2, 2006
Hyatt Regency Houston Downtown
Houston, Texas

More than 2,300 participants joined us in Houston, Texas, from as far away as Israel, Korea, the Philippines, the Dominican Republic, and China to make our 2006 Annual Conference in Houston, Texas, not only our largest, but also our most international conference ever!

Special thanks to the indefatigable Dr. Betsy Coe, committee chair; and to the hundreds of dedicated Houston-area volunteers who worked alongside her, without whom the conference would not have been possible. It is impressive to note that more than 350 volunteers from 35 schools and three teacher education programs in two states pitched in to make this conference so successful.

In addition to nearly 150 topical presentations, workshops, and networking events, highlights included an inspired Rambusch Lecture by John J. McDermott, Ph.D., Distinguished Professor of Philosophy and Humanities and Professor of Humanities in Medicine at Texas A & M University; and keynote presentations by Arthur Costa, Ed.D. (“The Habits of Mind” series) and Greg Smith (International Youth Advocates).

Feature presenters included William Sommers, Ph.D., speaking on “Reflective Practices to Improve Learning,” and author/educator Vivian Paley (The Girl with the Brown Crayon, Bad Guys Don’t Have Birthdays, and many more), who addressed “Rewriting a Classroom Life: Grading Ourselves in Fairness & Equality.” There were also trips to local schools and cultural attractions, musical performances by students, and a special presentation just for youth (“Responsibility is Your Future”).
