Covering the Cost of Conference Attendance

Schools and teacher education programs sometimes employ creative strategies to raise monies for conference registrations, travel, hotel, food, and/or incidentals for teachers, staff and/or adult learners.

Our teachers are able to go because we apply for a grant every year through the state of Wyoming Quality Counts program. It's a great way for teachers to be able to go to the AMS conference, which we have never been able to do before. Check your state for grants!

At our annual auction in March, the Fund-A-Need focus was professional development. Those funds were targeted for the AMS Conference.

Our school hosts a babysitting afternoon on a Saturday, asking for donations to the Teachers' Travel Fund (instead of having a price) - we do this early in December. Other fundraisers also contribute to the Fund: bake sale, T-shirts, yearbook, embroidered pillows, and just putting out a bucket labeled "Donate to the Travel Fund."

We have an extremely small professional development budget but love to send our teachers to the AMS conferences. We have tried several ways to raise funds: earmarking specific fundraisers such as pizza sales or wrapping paper sales; and having a special fund request specifically for teachers’ AMS conference registration fees. Parents have been extremely generous with all requests and we have been able to send 3-4 teachers to the conference with registration fees and hotel paid.

Ask the families in your school to seriously consider contributing towards conference expense rather than holiday gift giving. Explain to families the ebullient experience (post holiday) they will provide for the teachers!

The teachers can also host a “Parent’s Night Out” at your school one evening and charge a fixed fee. The teachers at my school raised over $2000.00 in 3 hours to cover their hotel costs.

While trying to determine the best way to honor my teachers who have worked at Twin Parks Montessori Schools 10 years or more, the Gala at the Boston conference was being planned. I am buying a table so we can attend the Gala together. What a fantastic treat it will be for my senior faculty!
